IRS CP01A Notice: IP PIN Assigned

The CP01A contains your Identity Protection PIN for the upcoming filing season. This is a six-digit number that must be included on your federal tax return. Without it, the IRS will reject your electronically filed return or delay processing of your paper return.

Why You Have an IP PIN

The IRS issues IP PINs to taxpayers who have been victims of identity theft, who have requested one proactively, or who live in certain areas where the IRS has expanded the program. The PIN prevents someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number.

How to Use It

When you file your federal return, enter the six-digit IP PIN in the designated field. If you use tax software, it will prompt you for the PIN. If a tax professional prepares your return, give them the PIN so they can include it. The PIN changes every year, so last year's PIN won't work for this year's return.

If You Lose the PIN

Log into your IRS Online Account at irs.gov to retrieve your current IP PIN. If you can't access your online account, call the IRS at 1-800-908-4490 for assistance. Do not wait until April 14 to try to find your PIN. Start looking early in the filing season so you have time to resolve access issues.

Common Mistakes

Using last year's PIN. Entering the PIN incorrectly (transposing digits). Forgetting to include it on the return and having the e-file rejected. Sharing the PIN with unauthorized people. Each of these creates delays or security risks.

Store the CP01A in a secure location with your tax records. You'll need the PIN when it's time to file, and you don't want to be scrambling for it the night before the deadline.
