IRS CP05A Notice: Documentation Needed to Verify Return

The CP05A follows the CP05. Where the CP05 told you to wait while the IRS reviewed your return, the CP05A tells you the IRS needs your help. They've identified specific items that require documentation before they can release your refund. You typically have 30 days to respond.

What They Usually Want

The CP05A lists specific documents the IRS needs. Common requests include W-2s from your employer, 1099s showing income and withholding, receipts or documentation supporting credits you claimed (EITC, education credits, child tax credit), proof of dependent residency (school records, medical records, lease agreements), and documentation of business income and expenses if you filed a Schedule C.

The Complete Response Rule

Send everything on the list. Every single item. If they ask for six documents and you send five, you'll wait another 8 to 12 weeks for the IRS to process your partial response and request the missing item. One complete response saves months compared to two or three incomplete ones.

How to Respond

Include the tear-off stub from the CP05A. Organize your documents to match the order of the request list. Make copies of everything before sending. Use certified mail with return receipt. Send to the address on the notice, not a general IRS address.

After You Respond

Allow 6 to 8 weeks for the IRS to process your documentation. If everything checks out, your refund will be released. If the IRS needs additional information, they'll send another letter. Monitor "Where's My Refund" and your IRS Online Account for status updates.
