The CP06A is a follow-up to the CP06, providing additional detail about how Premium Tax Credit adjustments affect your refund or create a balance due. If the IRS determined you received too much in advance premium tax credits, the excess reduces your refund or creates a balance. If you received too little, you may be owed an additional refund.
Reconciliation Issues
The most common issue is a mismatch between the advance credits reported on Form 1095-A and what you reconciled on Form 8962. Your actual household income may have been higher than the estimate you gave the marketplace, resulting in excess advance credits that must be repaid.
Other issues include changes in family size during the year, months of non-coverage that affect the credit calculation, and errors on Form 1095-A that the marketplace needs to correct.
How to Respond
Get your Form 1095-A from your marketplace account. Compare it line by line to your Form 8962. If the 1095-A is wrong, contact the marketplace for a corrected form and file an amended return. If your Form 8962 calculation was wrong, file an amended return with the correct reconciliation.
If the adjustment is correct, pay any balance or accept the reduced refund. Repayment caps may limit how much you owe back depending on your income level.
