What This Notice Means
Good news. The IRS removed the penalty it charged on your account. The notice identifies the penalty and the tax period involved.
What to Do
No action is required. You don't need to call or write.
- Keep the notice with your tax records for that period.
- Contact the IRS at the number on your notice if your address has changed.
If You Already Paid the Penalty
If you don't owe other taxes or debts the IRS is required to collect, you'll receive a refund of the penalty you paid within 6 to 8 weeks.
If you do owe on another period, the IRS can apply the refund to that balance instead of sending it to you.
Check the Rest of the Account
Removing a penalty doesn't always clear the account. Interest and other charges may still be on it, and the notice may not reflect a payment you made recently. If the account still shows a balance, compare it against your payment records. Paying any remaining balance stops more interest from building.
Keep the Record
Save this notice. If the same penalty shows up again later, or a future IRS notice doesn't reflect the removal, this is your proof.
