What This Notice Means

You filed your information return late. The CP142 covers Form 8038, Form 8038-G, and Form 8038-GC, the information returns filed for tax-exempt bond issues. The IRS needs more information from you before it can finish processing the return.

What to Do

You must request more time to file so the IRS can finish processing your return. Your response should be a letter that includes:

  • the information requested in the notice,
  • a copy of your late-filed return, and
  • a copy of the CP142 notice.

You must respond within 30 days from the date on the CP142.

How to Send It

  • By mail: send your letter and supporting information to the address at the top of the notice. Use certified mail so you have proof of the date.
  • By fax: you can fax your letter and supporting information to the fax number on the notice, using a fax machine or an online fax service. If you use an online service, understand its privacy and security before you send.

Use only one method. Don't mail and fax the same response. Duplicate responses can delay processing.

Don't Wait for a Confirmation

The IRS does not acknowledge receipt of your response. That's why your own proof matters. Keep a complete copy of what you sent, plus the certified mail receipt or fax confirmation.

Getting It Right

Read the notice closely. It tells you exactly what information the IRS wants. Answer every item it asks for. A response that skips something can mean another round of letters. If bond counsel or another professional handled the original filing, involve them now. You can authorize a representative with Form 2848.
