What This Notice Means

A CP212 is an automatic notice. It goes to filers who have more than one employer identification number (EIN). The IRS assigned one of those numbers in error and has now consolidated the two.

What to Do

Nothing, if the consolidation is correct. This is an informational notice. You don't have to respond.

Keep the notice with your permanent records. It documents which numbers were combined.

If You Think There's an Error

If you have questions, or you believe the IRS made a mistake in consolidating these numbers, you have two options:

  • Respond in writing using the space at the bottom of the notice.
  • Call the number at the top of the notice.

Act quickly if the two numbers belong to separate entities or separate plans. Merged records that shouldn't be merged cause filing and payment problems down the line.

Going Forward

Use the same EIN and the same name on every form you file. Using different numbers or name variations is how duplicate EINs get created in the first place.

Update the number with anyone who files for you or reports to the IRS under your EIN. That includes your accountant, payroll provider, and anyone who prepares returns for a retirement plan you sponsor, such as Form 5500 series returns.

If you've lost track of which EIN is yours, the IRS has a process for finding a lost or forgotten EIN.

If You Need Help

You can authorize a representative to deal with the IRS for you using Form 2848. If you can't get a problem fixed through normal channels, the Taxpayer Advocate Service may be able to help.
