What This Notice Means
Good news. The IRS approved your request for more time to file your Form 5500 series return and/or Form 8955-SSA, Annual Registration Statement Identifying Separated Participants with Deferred Vested Benefits.
Your request was made on Form 5558, Application for Extension of Time to File Certain Employee Plan Returns. The new due date is on the notice.
What to Do
- Keep this notice for your records. It's your proof the extension was approved.
- File your required form by the new due date shown on the notice.
Put the new date on your calendar and tell whoever prepares the plan's filings. An approved extension doesn't help if the return still comes in late.
Check Your Filing Requirement
Different plans have different filing requirements. If you aren't sure which forms your plan must file, review the requirements for your organization in the IRS retirement plan resources. The same resources cover general information on employee benefit plans.
Next Year
Mail Form 5558 on or before the due date of the return. A request that arrives late is denied, and the return is then late with no extension to fall back on. Build the extension date into the plan's annual compliance calendar so it doesn't depend on someone remembering.
