IRS CP22E Notice: Return Changes — No Balance or Refund Impact

The CP22E means the IRS made changes to your return, but the net effect is zero — no balance due and no refund change. The changes offset each other or were immaterial in their impact on your bottom line.

Why Review Matters

Even though the federal impact is zero, the changes may affect your state return. Most states use federal adjusted gross income as a starting point. If the IRS changed your income, deductions, or credits, those changes may flow through to your state taxes and create a state-level balance or refund.

Additionally, understanding what the IRS changed helps you file correctly in future years. If they corrected a recurring error, fixing it going forward prevents future notices.

No Action Required Federally

If the changes are correct and the net effect is zero, no action is needed for your federal return. File the notice with your records. If the changes are incorrect, you have 60 days to dispute them under math error authority.
