What This Notice Means
The IRS approved your request for an extension to file Form 5330, Return of Excise Taxes Related to Employee Benefit Plans.
Your new filing due date is shown on the notice.
What to Do
- Keep this notice for your records.
- File your required Form 5330 by the new due date shown on the notice.
- Pay any taxes owed by the original return due date.
Filing Time Is Not Payment Time
This is the part people miss. An extension of time to file doesn't extend the time to pay the tax due. The tax was due on the original due date, extension or not.
If you haven't paid yet and the original due date has passed, pay now. Waiting until the extended filing date to pay means the payment is late.
Check Your Filing Requirement
If you aren't sure what your organization needs to file, review the filing requirements in the IRS retirement plan resources. They also cover general information on employee benefit plans.
