IRS CP234 Notice: Premium Tax Credit Adjusted

The CP234 addresses an adjustment to the Premium Tax Credit calculated on your return. If you received advance premium tax credits through the ACA marketplace, your return must reconcile those credits using Form 8962. The CP234 means the IRS found a discrepancy in that reconciliation.

Common Discrepancies

Your actual household income differed from the estimate you gave the marketplace when enrolling. Family size changed during the year. Form 1095-A amounts don't match what you reported on Form 8962. Or Form 8962 wasn't filed at all.

If You Owe Money

If your actual income was higher than estimated, you received too much in advance credits. The excess is repaid through a reduced refund or a balance due. Repayment amounts may be capped depending on your income level, which provides some protection for lower-income taxpayers.

If the Adjustment Is Wrong

Get a copy of your Form 1095-A from your marketplace and compare it to what the IRS used. If the 1095-A is incorrect, request a corrected form from the marketplace and file an amended return with the correct information.
