What This Notice Means

At some point the IRS told your employer to withhold income tax from your wages at a specific rate. That is called a Withholding Compliance lock-in. This notice tells you the IRS has released those instructions.

This is good news. You're out of the program.

What to Do

  • Give your employer a valid Form W-4, Employee's Withholding Certificate, if you haven't already.
  • Submit a new Form W-4 any time your personal or financial situation changes.

If you don't give your employer a Form W-4, your employer must treat you as Single or Married filing separately in Step 1(c) of the form.

Check Your Withholding

The law requires you to have enough tax withheld from your wages. The lock-in happened because withholding wasn't keeping up. Don't let it happen again.

Use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator at any point during the year to figure the right withholding. Run it again after a raise, a new job, a marriage, or a change in dependents.

Will This Happen Again?

You won't be in the Withholding Compliance program next year. But you must keep filing and paying on time. If you don't have enough tax withheld, or you stop filing and paying on time, the IRS can issue another lock-in.

Keep This Notice

Keep the notice with your tax records. If your employer keeps withholding at the old rate, show them this notice and give them a new Form W-4. If you have questions, call the number on your notice.
