What This Notice Means

The IRS couldn't complete your Form 4506-C, IVES Request for Transcript of Tax Return. Form 4506-C lets an authorized third party, such as a mortgage lender, get a copy of your tax transcript to verify your income. Something on the request kept it from being processed.

What to Do

  • Read the notice carefully. It explains what you need to do to correct the request.
  • Contact the third party that requested the transcript and ask them to resubmit a corrected Form 4506-C.
  • Make sure the latest version of Form 4506-C is used.
  • Contact the IRS at the number on your notice if you have questions about your tax account.

Why It Matters

If a lender is waiting on this transcript, your loan can stall until the corrected request goes through. Call your lender or loan officer as soon as you get the notice. Don't assume they already know.

Other Things to Check

  • If your name or address has changed, update it with the IRS. A mismatch can cause a request to fail.
  • If you need to prove you didn't file a return, use Form 4506-T to request verification of non-filing.
  • Make sure your filed returns are correct. If they have mistakes, file Form 1040-X to fix them.
  • You can order your own transcript if you need it.

Keep a Copy

Keep the notice for your records. If you owe additional tax for any year, review your payment options so the balance doesn't hold up your financing.
