What This Notice Means
This notice goes to tax professionals and others who hold a Centralized Authorization File (CAF) number. The IRS assigned you a Personal Identification Number (PIN) so you can associate your existing CAF number with your Tax Pro Account. It's an identity assurance step.
You don't need to call or respond to this notice.
What to Do With the PIN
- Sign in to Tax Pro Account.
- Enter the PIN to associate your CAF number with your personal information.
What to Know About the PIN
- It can only be used to verify ownership of your CAF number in Tax Pro Account.
- It expires in 30 days.
- It's unique to your CAF number.
- It's for your use only. Keep it secure and don't share it with anyone, including staff.
If You Didn't Request a PIN
Call the IRS number at the top of your notice. An unrequested PIN tied to your CAF number is something to report right away, since a CAF number is used to act on clients' tax matters.
Why Link Your CAF Number
Once your CAF number is linked, you can use Tax Pro Account to submit Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative, or Form 8821, Tax Information Authorization, directly to a taxpayer's online account. That is faster than faxing or mailing authorizations.
Keep It on File
Store the PIN somewhere safe until you've used it. After you've linked your CAF number, keep the notice with your practice records.
