What This Notice Means
You claimed the qualified passenger vehicle loan interest (QPVLI) deduction on Schedule 1-A of your 2025 Form 1040. The IRS's initial review shows a potential error. This deduction requires a complete vehicle identification number (VIN), and it is limited to the qualifying interest you actually paid.
The CP321N is a warning, not a bill. The IRS is giving you a chance to check your work. If you ignore it and the deduction is wrong, expect more IRS correspondence.
What to Do
- Review your 2025 return and make sure every deduction is correct.
- If you made an error, file an amended return. If you e-filed, you can e-file the amendment.
- Share this notice with whoever prepared your return.
- If you amend your federal return, you may need to amend your state or local return too.
The Basics of This Deduction
For tax years 2025 through 2028, you may be able to deduct interest paid or accrued on a qualified passenger vehicle loan, up to $10,000 a year. It's available whether or not you itemize, and it's limited based on modified adjusted gross income.
To qualify, the loan generally must:
- Have been originated by you after December 31, 2024.
- Have been used to buy the vehicle. Lease payments don't count.
- Be for a vehicle bought for personal use.
- Be secured by a first lien on that vehicle.
The vehicle must be new (original use starts with you), made primarily for public roads, have at least 2 wheels, be a car, minivan, van, SUV, pickup, or motorcycle under 14,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating, and have undergone final assembly in the United States.
Common Mistakes
Missing or wrong VIN. The VIN is 17 characters. You'll find it on the dashboard, the driver's door frame label, your title, registration, or insurance card. Fixing it requires an amended return with the full, correct VIN.
Wrong amount. If you deducted more interest than you paid, amend with the right number.
Used or foreign-assembled vehicle. Neither qualifies.
