The CP44 notifies you that the IRS is holding your refund while they review your return. Unlike the CP05, which is a general review notice, the CP44 may indicate that the IRS identified a specific concern that needs resolution before the refund can be released.
What Triggers a CP44
The CP44 can be triggered by a variety of issues: a pending audit on a prior year that might affect the current year, a discrepancy identified during return processing, a credit or deduction that requires additional verification, or a match to a compliance program that requires manual review.
What to Do
Read the notice carefully for any specific instructions. Some CP44 notices ask you to take action (provide documents, call a specific number). Others are informational, telling you to wait while the IRS completes its review.
If the notice requests action, respond promptly and completely. If it's informational, allow the stated timeframe for the review to complete. Monitor your IRS Online Account and "Where's My Refund" for status updates.
How Long It Takes
Review timeframes vary based on the complexity of the issue. Simple reviews may resolve in 30 to 60 days. Complex reviews involving multiple years or compliance programs can take several months. If you haven't heard anything within 60 days of the CP44 date, call the number on the notice for a status update.
