What This Notice Means

CP51B is good news. The IRS computed the tax on your Form 1040 or 1040-SR, and you're due a refund. The notice explains how the IRS calculated it.

CP51B is one of three related notices the IRS sends after it computes the tax on a return. CP51A means you owe. CP51B means you're due a refund. CP51C means your balance is zero. CP51B is not a balance due notice and not a collection letter.

What to Do

  • Read the notice and compare the IRS's calculation with your copy of the return.
  • If you agree, you don't need to do anything.
  • If you disagree with the tax the IRS computed, contact the IRS.
  • Keep the notice with your tax records for that year.

When You'll Get the Refund

If you haven't received it yet, and you don't owe other taxes or other debts the IRS is required to collect, you should receive the refund within 2 to 4 weeks from the date of the notice.

If you do owe a past-due federal tax balance or another debt the IRS must collect, some or all of the refund can be applied to it. In that case, expect a separate notice explaining where the money went.

If You Disagree

Write or call using the contact information on the notice. If you write, explain why you disagree and include copies of anything that supports your position, such as cancelled checks or an amended return. If you call, have that paperwork ready. Keep a copy of everything you send.

Check the refund amount against your own numbers before you spend it. If the IRS's figure is higher than yours, find out why now. An overstated refund is easier to sort out at this stage than after the money is gone.
