What This Notice Means

Your child's Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number (ATIN) expires in 3 months. The IRS is giving you advance warning so you can act before it runs out.

What to Do

Use Form 15100, Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number (ATIN) Extension Request, which comes with your notice.

  • If you received a Social Security number (SSN) for your child, complete Form 15100 and send it in with that information.
  • If you don't have an SSN yet, complete Form 15100 to apply for a one-year extension of the ATIN.

Send your information one of two ways:

  • Through the IRS Document Upload Tool.
  • By fax to the number on your notice. If you use an online fax service, understand its privacy and security policies first.

If you have questions, call the number on your notice.

Timing Matters

You must request the extension before the ATIN expires. Don't wait until the last few weeks. Give yourself time to fix anything the IRS sends back.

The Extension Is Limited

The extension is only valid for 1 additional year. Use that year to get the SSN. If you reach the end of the extension without an SSN, you'll be in a tougher spot, so start that process now if you haven't already.

Tips

  • Keep a copy of the completed Form 15100 and your upload confirmation or fax receipt.
  • Make sure the IRS has your current mailing address.
  • Watch for the IRS's response approving the extension.
