What This Notice Means

The IRS applied a payment to your tax account. The notice shows the date and amount of the payment.

What to Do

Compare the payment date and amount with your records. Then look at the bottom line on the notice.

  • If the notice shows a refund, you don't need to respond. If you haven't received the refund yet, it should arrive within 2 to 3 weeks.
  • If the notice shows an amount due, pay it by the date stated on the notice.

If You Can't Pay the Balance

Pay as much as you can now. Then set up payment arrangements for the rest. You can apply for a payment plan or call the number on your notice. Paying what you can now reduces the interest and penalties that keep adding up on the unpaid amount.

If the Payment Was Misapplied

Sometimes a payment lands on the wrong tax year or the wrong type of tax. If that happened, write to the IRS at the address on the notice or call the number on the notice. Explain where the payment should have gone. Have your proof of payment ready: a bank statement, canceled check, or payment confirmation.
