IRS CP75A Notice: EITC Review — Additional Time Needed

The CP75A follows a CP75 and tells you the IRS needs additional time to complete its review of your Earned Income Tax Credit claim. Your refund continues to be held. The IRS may or may not need additional documentation from you at this stage.

Why the Delay

EITC reviews can take longer than standard processing because the IRS is verifying multiple eligibility requirements: income, qualifying children, residency, and filing status. They may be waiting for information from your employer, from schools verifying your child's enrollment, or from other third parties. High volume during filing season also creates backlogs.

What to Do

If the CP75A requests additional documentation, send it immediately. If it's purely informational (no action required from you), wait through the stated timeframe. Check "Where's My Refund" periodically for status updates.

If you previously submitted documentation in response to the CP75 and now you're getting a CP75A asking for more time, your documentation may have been sufficient but the IRS hasn't finished processing it. Don't resend documents unless specifically asked.

Timeline

EITC reviews with documentation requests can take 60 to 120 days from the date you submit your response. If the CP75A extends the timeline, add another 30 to 60 days. The IRS pays interest on refunds delayed beyond 45 days from the filing deadline.
