What This Notice Means
This is good news. The IRS allowed the Earned Income Credit (EIC) you claimed on your return.
If you're expecting a refund and you don't owe other taxes or debts the IRS is required to collect, you'll receive it within 8 weeks.
What to Do
Nothing right now. You don't need to respond.
- Keep a copy of this notice with your tax records.
- Check your IRS Online Account if you want to see your account information.
- Review Publication 596, Earned Income Credit, if you want to understand the rules for future years.
If Your Refund Doesn't Arrive
If you don't receive your refund within 8 weeks, call the number on your notice.
Keep in mind the refund can be smaller than expected, or not arrive, if you owe other taxes or certain debts the IRS must collect. If that happens, you should get a separate explanation.
Why Keep This Notice
EIC claims get reviewed often. If questions come up later about this year, this notice shows the IRS allowed your credit. Keep it with your return, your W-2s, and the records that support who lived with you and for how long.
Tips for Next Year
Consider filing electronically. It can help you avoid mistakes and find credits and deductions you qualify for, and in many cases you can file for free.
