What This Notice Means

The IRS received notice that you recently returned your clean vehicle to the dealer. It also received the value of the transferred clean vehicle credit back from the dealer.

Since the credit has been paid back, the IRS no longer requires you to file these forms with your federal return for this vehicle:

  • Form 8936, Clean Vehicle Credits
  • Form 8936, Schedule A, Clean Vehicle Credit Amount

What to Do

If the information is correct, you don't need to respond. Tell your tax preparer about this notice so the forms aren't filed for a vehicle you no longer own.

If You Didn't Return the Vehicle

If you did not return the vehicle listed on your notice, email or call the IRS immediately, using the email address or phone number on your notice. Don't wait until you file. Follow secure email practices if you send personal information by email.

If You Bought a Different Vehicle

This notice covers only the vehicle listed on it. If you bought another clean vehicle and transferred that credit to a dealer, the reporting rules for that vehicle are separate.

Practical Tips

  • Keep the return paperwork from the dealer.
  • Keep this notice with your tax records for that year.
  • Call the number on your notice if you can't find what you need.
