What This Notice Means

The IRS received notice that you recently returned your clean vehicle to the dealer.

Because you returned the vehicle listed on your notice, that vehicle is no longer eligible for the clean vehicle credit for the year it was placed in service.

What to Do

If the information is correct, you don't need to respond. Make sure the credit for that vehicle isn't claimed on your return. Tell your tax preparer about this notice before your return is prepared.

If You Didn't Return the Vehicle

If you did not return the vehicle listed on your notice, email or call the IRS immediately, using the email address or phone number on your notice. Don't wait. An error here could cost you a credit you're entitled to. Follow secure email practices if you send personal information by email.

If You Bought a Different Vehicle

This notice covers only the vehicle listed on it. If you replaced it with another clean vehicle, that vehicle's eligibility stands on its own.

Practical Tips

  • Keep the dealer's paperwork showing the purchase and the return.
  • Keep this notice with your tax records for the year involved.
  • Call the number on your notice if you can't find what you need.

Don't ignore this notice just because it doesn't ask for a reply. If the vehicle information is wrong, the time to fix it is now, before you file.
