What This Notice Means
The IRS is asking for your help locating a taxpayer you may know. You aren't the one with the tax problem. The IRS contacted you as a third party.
What to Do
- Complete Form 15106, which comes with your notice.
- Detach the notice stub.
- Return both in the envelope provided.
If you'd rather talk, call the number at the top of the notice. Either way, respond within 10 days from the date of your notice.
Give only what you know. If you don't know where the person is, say so.
Being on the Contact List
The IRS is required by law to keep a list of the people it contacts about another taxpayer. These are called third party contacts. In some cases, the IRS must provide that list to the taxpayer it's asking about.
If you don't want your name on that list, call or write to the IRS and ask to be excluded. Use the phone number at the top of the first page of your notice.
Is This Real?
If you're unsure the notice is legitimate, don't call a number from an email or text. Use the number printed on the notice itself, and check it against the IRS's published contact information.
Keep a Record
Keep this notice in your permanent records, along with a copy of what you sent and the date you sent it. Call the number at the top of the notice if you have questions.
