What This Notice Means
The IRS is asking for information about a taxpayer who has died. It needs the information to resolve a federal tax matter.
You may have received this because you're a family member, the person handling the estate, or someone else the IRS believes knows about the deceased person's affairs.
What to Do
- Complete Form 15107, which comes with your notice.
- Detach the notice stub.
- Return both in the envelope provided.
If you'd rather talk, call the number at the top of the notice. Either way, respond within 30 days from the date of the notice.
Answer what you know. If you don't have the information requested, say so. Keep a copy of what you send and note the date you sent it.
Things to Keep in Mind
- A request for information is not a bill to you personally.
- If you are the executor or personal representative, the IRS may follow up with you about the deceased person's returns or balances. Keep estate records organized.
- If you're unsure the notice is legitimate, use the number printed on the notice and verify it against the IRS's published contact information.
Keep a Record
Keep this notice in your permanent records. If the estate has unfiled returns or an IRS balance, deal with it before assets are distributed. You can authorize a representative with Form 2848 to handle IRS contact for you.
