IRS Letter 12E: Identity or Account Verification

The LTR 12E is a variant in the LTR 12 family that focuses on identity or account verification rather than missing documents. The IRS needs to confirm who you are before processing your return. The letter directs you to a specific verification method: online, by phone, or in person.

Why Verification Is Needed

The IRS flagged your return for identity verification based on factors in their fraud detection systems. This doesn't mean you did anything wrong. It means your return matched patterns that require human confirmation before processing. Common triggers include filing from a new address, significant income changes, first-time filing with a new employer, and multiple returns filed using the same SSN.

How to Verify

Follow the specific instructions on the LTR 12E. If it directs you online, use the URL provided. If it directs you to call, use the number on the letter. If it requires in-person verification at a Taxpayer Assistance Center, schedule an appointment and bring the required identification documents listed in the letter.

Have the LTR 12E, your tax return for the year in question, a prior year return, and a government-issued photo ID available for any verification method.

After Verification

Successful verification releases your return for processing. Refunds typically arrive within 6 to 9 weeks after verification is completed. If verification fails through one method, try an alternative method or visit a TAC in person.
