Letter 2788C is titled Undeliverable Mail - New Address Verification. It is not an "issue resolved" letter. The IRS sent you mail that came back as undeliverable. It then found a possible new address for you and sent this letter there to confirm it.

What This Letter Means

The IRS can't safely send your tax information to an address it isn't sure belongs to you. So before it updates your account or resends anything, it asks you to verify the new address. The letter usually includes the appropriate change of address form, such as Form 8822, Change of Address.

The important part: the IRS was trying to reach you about something. You may have missed a notice.

What to Do

  • Verify your address. Complete and return the enclosed form, or follow the letter's instructions.
  • Find out what you missed. Call the number on the letter or check your IRS online account. Ask which notices were returned.
  • Watch for deadlines. A returned notice can still carry a deadline. Some IRS deadlines run from the date the notice was mailed to your last known address, even if you never got it.
  • Keep your address current. Any time you move, file Form 8822 or update your address another way the IRS accepts.

If This Isn't Your Address

If the letter reached someone else, don't use it. Mark it "Misdirected Mail" and return it to the sender.

Keep a copy of what you send back. Use certified mail for paper responses.
