Letter 3064C is the IDRS Special Letter. It is a general purpose letter that IRS employees fill in with open paragraphs written for your situation. It is not a standard audit closing or no-change letter.
What This Letter Means
Because the content is custom, Letter 3064C can say many different things. Examples of how the IRS uses it include:
- Explaining where a payment or federal tax deposit was applied.
- Asking you to verify a payment, such as by sending a copy of the front and back of your check.
- Explaining why a submission could not be processed, such as a missing form.
- Explaining why a response you sent could not be accepted and what is still missing.
What to Do
- Read the whole letter. Identify the tax form, the tax period, and any amount.
- Look for a request. Phrases like "send us" or "we need" mean the IRS wants something back.
- If a reply is requested, respond by the date in the letter, include a copy of the letter, and keep proof of mailing.
- If the letter is only explaining an action, compare it to your records and keep it.
If Something Is Wrong
If the letter describes an action that does not match your records, such as a payment applied to the wrong period, call the number on the letter or write to the address shown with documentation. Keep tracking any deadline from other notices. This letter does not pause them.
