Letter 3217C, Automated Letter - Installment Agreement Accepted; Terms Explained, is the systemic letter the IRS sends when an installment agreement is entered into its system. It confirms the agreement and spells out the conditions you have to meet. Letter 2273C serves the same purpose when the automated version is not appropriate.

What It Tells You

The letter states your payment amount, your due date, and the balance covered. It may also explain that a new tax liability was added to an existing agreement. If you have a payroll deduction agreement, it can confirm that payments will continue through your employer until the balance is paid.

The Conditions That Matter

Make every payment on time. File all required returns on time. Pay all future tax when due. Let the IRS know if your financial situation changes and it asks for updated information. Breaking any of these can lead to a default notice and, eventually, termination of the agreement.

Keep this letter with your tax records for the life of the agreement. If a payment is ever misapplied, it is your proof of the terms.
