What This Letter Means
Letter 324C, Amended (Numbered) Return Incomplete for Processing, means the IRS received your amended return and stopped. Something required is missing. The letter tells you what.
The IRS generally uses this letter when an amended return shows an overall balance due, or reports additional income, and is missing a required form, schedule, signature, or other information. It goes out on amended individual returns (Form 1040-X) and amended business returns such as Form 1120-X. It is also used when a signature is missing on a disaster loss claim or on a return from an APO, FPO, or DPO address.
Common requests include:
- A missing signature. An amended return must be signed by you, or by a representative specifically authorized on Form 2848 to sign returns.
- Form 4684 for a disaster or casualty loss claim.
- Form 8962 when marketplace health coverage and advance premium tax credit payments are involved.
- A schedule or supporting form that backs up a change you made.
What to Do
- Read the letter line by line. It lists every item the IRS needs.
- Send exactly what is asked for. If the issue is a signature, sign where the letter tells you to.
- Include a copy of the letter so your reply gets matched to your case.
- Respond by the date on the letter. Keep copies and use certified mail if you mail it.
If You Don't Respond
The IRS holds the case for about 45 days waiting for your reply. If nothing comes in, it processes only the items it can determine from what it has. If none of the changes can be determined, it sends Letter 916C saying it can't consider your claim. If the missing item was a signature, credits you claimed will not be allowed.
If you reply but leave something out, the IRS adjusts only what it can and sends Letter 474C explaining what you didn't provide. A late reply can still be worked, but it slows everything down. Answer on time and answer completely.
