What Is Letter 6201?
Letter 6201 is the IRS Tax Compliance Report for individuals and sole proprietors. It summarizes filing and payment compliance; businesses use Letter 6574 instead.
You may need the report for a job, loan, government benefit, or another application. The IRS offers an on-demand, digitally authenticated version through Individual Online Account. Its embedded IRS certificate lets the receiving organization verify authenticity.
What the Status Means
- Compliant: Timely filing and payment, with no overdue returns or unpaid tax debt.
- Noncompliant: An overdue return or unpaid debt appears as of the report date.
- Compliance issue: This can reflect an installment agreement, late filing or payment history, a civil fraud penalty even if paid, or a balance under administrative or judicial review.
An installment agreement can therefore still produce a compliance issue. The report omits income, dependents, and filing status.
How to Get and Share It
Follow the IRS download instructions: in Individual Online Account, select Records and status, then Tax records, then Tax compliance report. Share the original downloaded PDF; screenshots, scans, and Print to PDF copies do not preserve the authenticated document.
If Something Looks Wrong
Recent activity may not appear immediately: the IRS estimates about two weeks for payments and four to six weeks for returns to post.
Start by comparing the report date and tax years with your filing acknowledgments, payment confirmations, and account records. Keep supporting documents and identify the specific discrepancy before contacting the IRS or your tax professional. Do not file a duplicate return or make a duplicate payment just to change the label.
Do You Need to Respond?
Treat this as a status report, not a substitute for instructions on a separate IRS notice. Check the requesting organization's submission deadline, and preserve any deadlines on existing tax notices. If a reported issue could affect your application, ask the organization what documentation it needs.
