Letter 6475, Economic Impact Payment (EIP) 3 End of Year, went out starting in January 2022. It shows the total amount of the third Economic Impact Payment you received for tax year 2021, including any plus-up payments.
The point of the letter is to help you figure out whether you can claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 return.
What It Covers
Letter 6475 applies only to the third round of EIPs, issued between March 2021 and December 2021, including plus-up payments. Plus-up payments were additional EIP 3 payments sent to people who:
- Received a third payment based on a 2019 tax return or on information from the Social Security Administration, Railroad Retirement Board, or Veterans Administration, and
- Were eligible for more based on their 2020 tax return.
Married filing jointly? Each spouse gets a separate letter showing half of the total. Each spouse also logs into their own IRS online account to see their portion.
What to Do
No response is needed. Most eligible people already received the full amount they were entitled to. If you didn't, review the payment information to decide whether you should claim the Recovery Rebate Credit for 2021.
One example: parents of a child born in 2021, or anyone who added a new qualifying dependent in 2021, didn't get a third-round payment for that dependent. They may be eligible for up to $1,400 for that dependent by claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit.
Your IRS online account also shows your third EIP total and your advance Child Tax Credit total.
If the IRS Changed Your Credit
If the Recovery Rebate Credit claimed on your 2021 return doesn't match IRS records, the IRS can change it. Compare Letter 6475 with your bank records and online account before deciding who got it wrong.
Keep the letter with your 2021 tax records.
