Letter 6483C means the IRS received a federal income tax return (Form 1040 series) filed under your Social Security number or ITIN. Before it processes the return, the IRS needs you to verify your identity and confirm the return.
This letter is part of a pilot that uses ID.me's in-person verification service.
Don't file Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit, in response to this letter. Follow the letter's instructions instead.
If You Did NOT File
Call the Taxpayer Protection Program hotline shown on your letter and tell the IRS you didn't file a tax return.
If You DID File
- Go to the website in the letter, create an account, and complete the initial identity verification questions.
- Schedule an in-person identity verification appointment at an Identity Network Location near you.
- After the in-person verification, you'll get instructions to finish the process with the IRS.
The appointment is identity verification only. You don't need to bring or show any tax information.
What to Bring
Bring your registration code and 2 to 3 identity documents:
- One from the primary list that matches your current name and date of birth, such as a state driver's license, state ID card, U.S. passport or passport card, or government agency photo ID. Military IDs, temporary documents, and paper documents are not accepted.
- One that shows your current valid U.S. address.
- Possibly a document showing your full Social Security number. Your appointment confirmation email lists what you need.
Secondary documents include a Social Security card, birth certificate, marriage certificate, vehicle registration or title, or voter registration card. Bank statements, utility bills, phone bills, medical bills, and pay stubs also count, but they can't be more than 90 days old and must show your full name, current address, and account number. Pay stubs don't need an account number.
If You Don't Respond
The IRS won't be able to process your return, issue a refund, or credit any overpayment to your account.
The phone numbers on the letter handle identity and return verification only. They can't give you refund status or other tax information.
