Letter 692 in plain English
Letter 692: what it means, in 30 secondsA 30-second overview from tax attorney Darrin T. Mish: what this notice is, the deadline, and your first move.
Letter 692 is a request for consideration of additional examination findings. It generally follows information you submitted after an examination report. The IRS reviewed that information and is sending a revised report or explaining why the proposed changes remain.
Compare the Reports
Read the new report alongside the earlier report and your submission. Identify which adjustments changed, which did not, and whether the examiner addressed each document or legal argument you provided. Recalculate the tax and penalties rather than relying only on the summary.
Respond by the Printed Date
IRS procedures generally allow 15 days for a response to Letter 692. Use the exact date printed on your copy. If you still disagree, explain the unresolved items clearly and include only the supporting material needed to address them. Keep proof of a timely response.
Know the Next Stage
Letter 692 is part of the examination process; it is not itself a Tax Court petition deadline. The case may proceed to Appeals or to a statutory notice of deficiency. Read the enclosure carefully so you know which rights are available now and what notice may come next.
