Letter 707C is a refund delay letter. Its IRS title is "Refund / Return Delayed in Processing; Refund Forthcoming." It tells you two things: your refund, or the return it comes from, is taking longer than normal, and the refund is still coming.

Why You Got It

The IRS sends this letter when a refund is being held up but isn't being denied. It is also used after the IRS corrects something on an account, such as moving a payment or credit to the right tax period, when that correction produces a refund.

What to Do

  • Read the whole letter. If it asks for anything, send it by the date shown.
  • Don't file a second return for the same year to speed things up. A duplicate return creates more delay.
  • Keep the letter with your tax records for that year.
  • If the refund doesn't arrive in the time the letter gives, call the number on your letter.

Will You Get the Full Amount?

A refund can still be applied to other federal tax you owe before it reaches you. If that happens, the IRS sends a separate notice explaining the offset.

When to Get Help

Most people who get a 707C just need to wait. If months pass with no refund and no explanation, or you get a different letter saying the refund is being reduced or reviewed, that's the point to have someone look at your account transcript.
