IRS Letter 725C: Audit Follow-Up Appointment

The LTR 725C schedules a follow-up appointment in your ongoing audit. The initial examination has taken place, but the auditor needs additional time, documentation, or discussion before finalizing their report. This letter schedules that continuation.

Why a Follow-Up

The initial appointment raised questions that need additional documentation. The auditor identified new issues that weren't part of the original scope. You provided documents at the first appointment that the auditor needs to verify. Or the audit simply isn't complete and requires more time.

Respond or Face Consequences

If you don't respond to the LTR 725C — don't attend the follow-up and don't reschedule — the auditor will finalize their report based on the information they have. That means every unsubstantiated item gets disallowed. The resulting proposed changes will be entirely unfavorable because you didn't participate.

Preparation

Review what was discussed at the initial appointment. If the auditor asked for additional documents, bring them. If new issues were raised, prepare documentation for those. If you didn't have representation at the first appointment and the audit is going poorly, this is the time to bring in a professional.
