IRS CP567 Notice: Identity Theft Case Resolved

The CP567 confirms your identity theft case has been resolved. The IRS has removed the fraudulent activity from your account, processed your legitimate return (if applicable), and closed the investigation. Your account should now reflect only your legitimate tax activity.

Verify Your Account

Don't just file the CP567 and move on. Log into your IRS Online Account and verify that all fraudulent transactions have been removed, your legitimate return is processed correctly, any refund due has been issued or is in process, and your account balance reflects only legitimate obligations.

Request an account transcript to compare against your records. Look for unfamiliar transaction codes, unexpected balances, or missing credits. If anything looks wrong, contact the IDTVA unit using the number from your earlier correspondence.

Future Protection

The IRS should have assigned you an Identity Protection PIN. Use it on every future return. If you didn't receive one, request it through your IRS Online Account or by calling the IRS. File your returns as early as possible each year to beat potential fraudsters. Continue monitoring your IRS account quarterly.

Beyond the IRS, take broader identity protection steps: credit monitoring, fraud alerts or freezes with credit bureaus, and monitoring your Social Security earnings record at ssa.gov.
