Proof of an existing number
Letter 147C confirms an Employer Identification Number previously assigned by the IRS. It is useful when you need written EIN confirmation and no longer have the original assignment notice.
How to request confirmation
The IRS EIN guidance lists three routes: an Entity transcript, a digital CP575 available to eligible Business Tax Account users, or a request for Letter 147C through the IRS business and specialty tax line.
Check the entity, not just the digits
Before giving the document to a bank or other requester, compare the entity name and EIN with your business records. Keep the original securely and share only through a channel you trust. If information differs, clarify the discrepancy rather than editing an IRS-issued document.
The related CP575 guide explains the digital verification option. Do not apply for another EIN merely because you misplaced the paperwork for the existing one.
