IRS Letter 2273C: Identity Verification

The LTR 2273C is an identity verification request similar to the LTR 488C, 507C, and 5747C. The IRS needs to confirm your identity before processing your return. The verification method (online, phone, or in-person) is specified in the letter.

Verification Steps

Have the letter, your tax return for the year in question, a prior year return, and a government-issued photo ID ready. Complete verification using the method specified. Online verification is typically fastest. Phone verification may require a wait but gives you the opportunity to resolve issues in real time.

After Verification

Successful verification releases your return for processing. Refunds typically arrive 6 to 9 weeks after verification. If verification fails, you may need to try an alternative method or visit a Taxpayer Assistance Center in person.
