IRS Letter 5073C: Identity Theft Case Resolved

The LTR 5073C confirms your identity theft case has been resolved. The IRS has completed its investigation, removed fraudulent activity from your account, and processed your legitimate return. This is the conclusion of the identity theft resolution process.

Post-Resolution Checklist

Verify your account is clean by logging into your IRS Online Account. Check that all fraudulent transactions have been removed, your legitimate return is processed correctly, any refund due has been issued, and your account balance reflects only legitimate obligations. Request a full account transcript and review it line by line.

Set Up Ongoing Protection

If you haven't received an IP PIN, request one through your IRS Online Account. The IP PIN prevents future unauthorized filings using your SSN. File your returns early each year — the earlier you file, the harder it is for a criminal to beat you. Continue monitoring your IRS account quarterly and your credit reports regularly.

If Something Isn't Right

If the LTR 5073C says the case is resolved but your account still shows fraudulent activity, contact the IDTVA unit immediately. Occasionally cases are closed prematurely or the account cleanup isn't complete. Don't assume closure means everything is fixed — verify it yourself.
