IRS Letter 4883C: Identity Theft Case Assigned

The LTR 4883C confirms your identity theft case has been assigned to a specialist in the Identity Theft Victim Assistance (IDTVA) unit. A specific employee is now working your case. This is progress — your case has moved from the intake queue to active investigation.

What the Specialist Does

The IDTVA specialist reviews the fraudulent return filed in your name, compares it to your legitimate return, verifies your identity, removes fraudulent transactions from your account, and processes your legitimate return. They may contact you for additional information during the investigation.

Your Point of Contact

The LTR 4883C should include a phone number for contacting your assigned specialist or the IDTVA unit handling your case. Use this number rather than the general IRS line. The specialist has direct access to your case file and can provide specific status updates.

Timeline

Identity theft cases typically take 120 to 270 days to resolve. Some complex cases take longer. The specialist will contact you if they need additional information. Respond promptly to every request to keep the case moving forward.

While You Wait

File your legitimate return if you haven't already (by paper with Form 14039 attached). Monitor your IRS Online Account for changes. Keep records of all IRS correspondence related to the case. If you haven't already, request an IP PIN for future filing protection.
