The LTR 507C is the IRS's request to verify your identity before processing your return. It's one of the most commonly issued identity verification letters, alongside the LTR 488C and the LTR 5747C. The process is straightforward, but delays in completing it mean delays in your refund.
Verification Options
The LTR 507C typically provides two paths. Online verification through the IRS Identity Verification portal at idverify.irs.gov, where you'll answer questions about your financial history. Or phone verification using the toll-free number on the letter, where an IRS employee walks you through similar questions.
Online is faster. The system gives you an immediate pass or fail. If you pass, your return moves into processing and your refund should arrive within 6 to 9 weeks. Phone verification requires waiting on hold but gives you the opportunity to explain your situation if the automated questions don't work.
What You'll Need
Have these ready before you start: the LTR 507C letter, the tax return you filed for the year in question, a prior year tax return, your current address and any addresses from the last few years, and the last four digits of your Social Security number.
The verification questions are drawn from commercial databases and may include questions about previous car loans, mortgage amounts, credit card accounts, or former addresses. If you've recently moved, changed jobs, or opened new accounts, the questions may be harder to answer correctly.
If Verification Fails
If you can't verify online, try the phone number. If phone verification also fails, you may need to visit a Taxpayer Assistance Center in person with photo ID and supporting documents. The LTR 5747C specifically requires in-person verification, but the LTR 507C sometimes leads to that path if other methods fail.
Don't Delay
Your refund is frozen until verification is complete. The process takes 15 to 30 minutes. There's no reason to wait. Verify the day you receive the letter and your refund gets back on track.
