IRS Letter 5747C: In-Person Identity Verification

The LTR 5747C is different from other identity verification letters because it requires in-person verification. You can't verify online. You can't verify by phone. You must physically visit a Taxpayer Assistance Center with valid identification.

Why In-Person

The IRS sends the LTR 5747C when their system determines that the risk level requires face-to-face verification. This may be because prior verification attempts failed, because the return has characteristics associated with sophisticated fraud schemes, or because the IRS needs to visually confirm your identity documents.

What to Bring

Bring the LTR 5747C letter, a current government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or state ID), a second form of identification (Social Security card, birth certificate, or another photo ID), the tax return you filed for the year in question, and a prior year tax return if available.

Without proper identification, the TAC can't process your verification and you'll need to return with the correct documents. Check the list on the letter carefully before your visit.

Making an Appointment

Most Taxpayer Assistance Centers require appointments. Call 1-844-545-5640 to schedule one, or check irs.gov for your nearest TAC location and hours. During peak filing season (February through April), appointments may be limited. Schedule as early as possible.

After Verification

Once you verify in person, the TAC employee processes your verification and removes the hold on your return. Refunds typically arrive within 6 to 9 weeks after successful in-person verification, though it can be longer during peak season.

If traveling to a TAC is difficult due to distance, health, or other constraints, call the IRS to discuss alternatives. In some cases, the Taxpayer Advocate Service can assist with verification for taxpayers who face genuine hardship in reaching a TAC.
